Experience a journey through history at The Mather Homestead, Darien’s treasured National Historic Landmark. As part of Connecticut’s Open House Day on Saturday, June 8, 2024, the Homestead is offering free tours from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, inviting families, history enthusiasts, and curious minds to explore its storied past.
The Mather Homestead, built in 1778, stands as a remarkable testament to American history. Originally constructed as a colonial farmhouse, it served as a refuge during the Revolutionary War and later transformed into a summer estate under the guidance of Stephen Tyng Mather, the first Director of the National Park Service. This historic site provides a vivid glimpse into the lives of six generations of the Mather family, culminating in its donation to a foundation dedicated to preserving its legacy.
Visitors on June 8 will be transported back in time as they wander through rooms filled with artifacts, period furnishings, and exhibits detailing the Homestead’s significance. Highlights include tales of Revolutionary War espionage, the architectural evolution of the home, and Stephen Tyng Mather’s pioneering conservation efforts.
The Mather Homestead isn’t just a museum; it’s a vibrant educational center offering engaging programs year-round. For younger visitors, the Kids Programs bring history to life through interactive activities. Children can participate in colonial crafts, nature explorations, and history-themed scavenger hunts.
