Question: Is there anywhere to shred old papers and dispose of hazardous materials?
Answer: Twice a year, the Town of New Canaan sponsors “Shred Days” where residents can shred papers free of charge. This is a great way to safely get rid of personal papers and confidential materials, and is only open to New Canaan residents.
The next Shred Day is coming up on Saturday, May 4. Bring your materials to the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 394 Main Street from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. Please note: no three ring binders, metal clips, computer media, or plastic covers can be put in the shred bins.
In addition to regular household garbage, The New Canaan Transfer Station accepts certain other materials all year long including appliances, batteries (all kinds), electronics, computer and television screens, construction demolition materials, propane tanks, and tires. These materials have a special drop off spot – on the far side of the large garage. You must have a Transfer Station Pass to drop off items.
Finally, every month a different town in Fairfield County sponsors a Hazardous Waste Collection Day, where residents can dispose of household materials that have the potential to be harmful to human health or the environment. This type of waste is often toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive.
Examples of hazardous household waste include: transmission fluid, bug spray, diesel fuel, gasoline, furniture polish, herbicide or weed killer, rat poison, kerosene, lighter fluid, paint (all kinds), paint primer, turpentine, and wood varnish.
The next Hazardous Waste Collection day is on May 4 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Island Beach Parking Lot in Greenwich. There is another on June 1 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Noroton Heights Station in Darien. (New Canaan will host on September 14.)
