In collaboration with AECOM, a multinational infrastructure consulting firm, the Town of New Canaan has enlisted the services of Flow Assessment Services to conduct comprehensive dye testing in 23 specific locations within the sewered segment of the town. The initiative aims to identify potential inflow and infiltration (INI) into the sewer system by tracing the movement of non-toxic green or red tracer dye through the stormwater system.
The testing process involves adding the tracer dye to the stormwater system at each designated location, followed by a meticulous inspection of the adjacent sewer system to ascertain whether the dyed water is infiltrating from the stormwater system. These tests, which are expected to last approximately 2-3 hours at each location, will play a crucial role in pinpointing any direct or indirect connections between the stormwater and sewer systems.
Public safety is a top priority, with officials ensuring adequate notification before testing commences. It’s important to note that the tracer dye used poses no threat to human health or the environment. As a result of the testing, residents may observe dyed water discharging from stormwater outfalls. The Town emphasizes that this is a normal part of the process and should not cause alarm.
The expected timeline for the dye testing is from February 21st to March 1st. However, it’s essential to be mindful of potential shifts in the testing period beyond the 24-to-72-hour timeframe due to weather, holidays, or weekends.

In speaking with the New Canaan Sentinel, Tiger Mann, Director of Public Works, explained, “We have some areas where we believe there’s some cross connections, meaning that the sanitary sewers connected with our storm drain. We’re treating that stormwater, and we don’t want it infiltrating into the sewer system. This testing will help us identify and address these issues efficiently.”
