New Canaan High School senior, Luke Huang, has further distinguished himself in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search by advancing to the top 40 finalists as of January 24, a significant milestone following his initial recognition as one of the top 300 scholars. This latest achievement underscores Huang’s exceptional dedication to science and solidifies his status as one of the nation’s most promising young scientists.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search 2024, now in its 83rd year, is a renowned platform that showcases the ingenuity and dedication of young scientists. The finalists, representing 36 schools across 19 states, each receive $25,000 and will compete this March for an additional $1.8 million in awards, including the top prize of $250,000.
From the largest pool of applicants since the 1960s, consisting of 300 scholars and 2,162 entrants, forty finalists were chosen based on the originality and creativity of their scientific research, as well as their achievements and leadership both inside and outside of the classroom.
Huang, who was selected from a highly competitive pool of 712 high schools across 46 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and other countries, has made significant strides with his research. His project, “Binary Cellular Analysis: Understanding the Link Between Aging and Mortality Risk,” falls under the critical category of Cellular & Molecular Biology.
Upon learning of his advancement in the competition, Huang expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be recognized as a 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar.” He further stated, “… It’s incredibly fulfilling to apply my scientific skills towards addressing real-world problems, and I’m hopeful that this will inspire more high school students to pursue similar paths.”
The selection process for the Regeneron Science Talent Search is notably rigorous. Each entry is meticulously reviewed by a panel of Ph.D. scientists, engineers, or mathematicians, with finalists chosen based on research, leadership skills, curiosity, innovation, academic commitment, and extracurricular activities.
Michael LeDuc, Teacher and Chair of the New Canaan High School Science Department, shared his pride in Huang’s continued success: “We are incredibly excited for Luke. This is a great honor, and we are proud of his hard work and continued dedication to science.”
Huang also took a moment to acknowledge the support he received from his school, especially Mr. Reid, who played a crucial role in his journey: “I am so thankful for the unwavering support I’ve received from our school, especially Mr. Reid, whose guidance and enthusiasm have been priceless,” he noted.
As a top 40 finalist, Huang will now participate in a week-long competition in Washington, D.C., vying for a share of more than $1.8 million in awards. The top 10 winners will be announced at the Regeneron Science Talent Award Ceremony on March 12, 2024.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search has a long history of identifying young innovators who combine their STEM talent with dedication and leadership skills to drive society forward. Its alumni include recipients of the world’s most coveted science and math honors, including 13 Nobel Prizes and 21 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships.
