The New Canaan Rams have demonstrated formidable prowess in the 2024 high school football season, achieving a 7-1 record under the leadership of Coach Lou Marinelli. Their campaign commenced with a commanding 42-13 victory over Maloney on September 13, followed by a 41-7 win against Warde on September 20. The Rams faced a setback on September 27, suffering a 0-14 loss to Masuk during Brian Wilderman Night. However, they rebounded with a 30-14 triumph over Ludlowe on October 5. After a bye week, New Canaan secured a 23-10 win against Staples on October 19, a 32-0 shutout over Wilton on October 25, a 49-7 victory against Norwalk on November 1, and a 50-19 win over Brien McMahon on Nov. 8.
A significant milestone was reached on November 8, when Coach Lou Marinelli achieved his 400th career win as the Rams defeated Brien McMahon. This accomplishment underscores Marinelli’s enduring impact on Connecticut high school football. According to the Connecticut High School Football Record Book, Marinelli’s career record stands at 400-114-7, with a 381-107-6 record at New Canaan since he began coaching there in 1981.
The Rams’ offensive strategy has been spearheaded by senior quarterback Luke Robinson and junior wide receiver Andrew Esposito. In the season opener against Maloney, Robinson connected with Esposito for five touchdowns, contributing to the team’s 42-13 victory.
The defense has also been formidable, allowing an average of just 9.3 points per game as of early November.
The community has expressed widespread admiration for Coach Marinelli’s 400th win. Former player Myles Baliotti commented, “Congrats Coach on your 400th win. Couldn’t be more proud to be one of your former players.”
Looking ahead, the Rams are scheduled to face Bridgeport Central at home on November 15, followed by a fun traditional Thanksgiving Day game against Darien on November 28.
Coach Marinelli’s recent accolade as the 2024 National High School Athletic Coaches Association Football Coach of the Year further highlights his dedication and success. His leadership continues to inspire both players and the broader New Canaan community.
As the season progresses, the Rams’ blend of experienced coaching and athletic talent positions them as strong contenders for continuing postseason success.
