The New Canaan Rams are set to face the undefeated Staples Wreckers on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. after both teams enjoyed a week off. With both teams excelling defensively—New Canaan allowing 12 points per game and Staples just 8.8—any points scored in this matchup will be hard-earned.
New Canaan enters the game after a pivotal 30-14 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe on October 5. The Rams’ disciplined execution and resilient defense played key roles in outlasting Ludlowe. Quarterback Luke Robinson set the tone early, connecting with Simon Tchakarov for a 4-yard touchdown. Special teams played a significant role in the win, as Tucker Stevens contributed three field goals and three extra points, helping to extend the Rams’ lead throughout the game.
On the defensive side, New Canaan’s Ryan Francis and Jack Crowell each forced fumbles, while Michael Smith recorded 13 tackles and an interception, stifling Ludlowe’s offense. Despite Ludlowe’s Liam Bond scoring two rushing touchdowns, New Canaan’s defense held firm to secure the win. Stevens’ reliable kicking extended the lead, with his 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter sealing the game.
In addition to the Rams’ on-field success, halftime at the game was a spirited affair thanks to the NC Dance Clinics, a new dance and cheer program for young students. Forty performers, ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade, took to the field to showcase routines from the Mini Rams Cheer, Mini Rams Dance Team, and Pop Stars classes.
The NC Dance Clinics specialize in six-week programs designed for young students eager to explore dance and cheer. Their next session, starts November 9 and runs through December 17. More information about upcoming programs can be found at www.ncdanceclinics.com.
Staples, meanwhile, remains undefeated after a dominant 47-0 victory over Westhill two weeks ago. Running back Kody Goldman led the charge with 93 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Nick Weil threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, completing 71.4% of his passes. Staples’ defense also excelled, intercepting three passes, with Callum McLean and Michael Loya leading the way.
The Rams’ last victory over Staples came in October 2019, when they secured a 41-21 win.
As both teams prepare for this high-stakes matchup, the combination of strong defense, special teams play, and the growing community spirit promises an exciting and hard-fought battle on Saturday.
