New Canaan’s New Star: The Cinema

By Robert Williamson

New Canaan Playhouse was abuzz with energy during a special event hosted at the freshly refurbished Cinema Lab. Residents and dignitaries gathered for an exclusive pre-screening of Reagan, a film that had yet to be fully seen by the public. Luke Parker Bowles, the dynamic event organizer, welcomed the excited crowd, stating, “This is a special screening, and no one else has seen it properly yet in this form.” He then introduced State Senator Ryan Fazio, who entertained the crowd with humor before turning to the significance of the event.

“They had someone important, but they canceled,” Fazio joked, eliciting laughter, “and I’m here now.” Despite the lighthearted introduction, Fazio’s message was clear: Cinema Lab represents a significant milestone for New Canaan, and its impact on the town’s culture and economy cannot be overstated. “This will serve as the anchor for New Canaan’s downtown for a generation to come. It’s absolutely fantastic,” he declared.

Fazio highlighted the collective efforts behind the project. “The entire community deserves thanks for its support, both private and public,” he continued, referring to the collaboration between town residents, local representatives, and state government. He pointed out the $2 million grant that helped fund the project, a significant contribution by New Canaan’s legislative delegation, including Representative Tom O’Dea. “We were proud to help,” Fazio noted.

The evening’s main attraction, Reagan, set the tone for the night. Fazio drew parallels between Ronald Reagan’s optimistic vision for America and New Canaan’s promising future. “Reagan himself was a symbol of American optimism,” he observed, reflecting on the economic growth during Reagan’s presidency and suggesting a similar spirit of progress for the town. “By the end of his second term, it was morning in America.”

The screening was not just about enjoying a film. It was also a celebration of New Canaan’s ability to preserve its cultural heritage while fostering innovation. Fazio remarked on the importance of knowing history to improve the present, stating, “We all need to study and know history in order to be good citizens.”

Fazio’s parting words, “Enjoy the playhouse for the years to come,” resonated with everyone in the theater, serving as a reminder of the town’s collective achievement.

Not everyone headed straight to the theater that evening. Some attendees opted to enjoy a meal at the Cinema Lab Pub before the screening. Those who dined prior to the event were treated to a menu featuring a range of enticing dishes and carefully crafted cocktails.

Among the standout options, the Deviled Eggs ($12) were delightful, bursting with flavor from the pimentón and chives, providing a rich, smoky essence. We had it with freshly baked sourdough making the eggs an indulgent yet approachable meal.

Another crowd favorite was the Burrata Caprese ($26), where the jewel box tomatoes and candied Sicilian pistachios add texture and sweetness to the creamy burrata, a dish that feels both rustic and refined. The Dry-Aged Pub Burger ($29) also impresses with its English cheddar and B&B pickles, layered with a Hollywood sauce that provides a subtle tang, making each bite memorable. The side of thick, golden fries adds a satisfying crunch, rounding off the dish perfectly.

For dessert, the Sticky Toffee Pudding ($15) is a decadent choice, its pineapple rum dulce de leche and vanilla buttercream melding together in a sinfully sweet combination. This dish balances sweetness with a hint of tropical zest, leaving a lasting impression.

Complementing the food are the pub’s refreshing cocktails. The pictured drink showcases creativity with dried citrus and ginger garnishes, evoking a blend of seasonal flavors that enhance the experience. Whether you’re looking for something crisp and tart or smooth and mellow, the cocktail menu offers something to suit any palate, making the Cinema Lab Pub a delightful destination for food and drink lovers alike.

In all, the night at Cinema Lab seemed to be a testament to New Canaan’s community spirit, its dedication to preserving local culture, and its excitement for the future.
