Picture starting your day only to discover your car missing from your driveway. This alarming scenario is becoming increasingly common in Greenwich and across the United States.

Since 2019, motor vehicle theft has surged over 25%, according to the FBI, with a vehicle stolen every 31 seconds nationwide. Connecticut alone reported 7,273 incidents of motor vehicle theft in 2022, with residences being the most common theft locations.

Recent data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) shows vehicle thefts reached new heights in 2023, increasing by about 1% over 2022. For the first time in years, passenger cars surpassed full-size pickup trucks as the most stolen vehicles, driven by models from Hyundai and Kia. Popular Honda vehicles and the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and 1500 pickups rounded out the top ten.

Social media trends may be contributing to the rise in thefts of specific Hyundai and Kia models, particularly those lacking immobilizing equipment. The NICB report also highlights the use of advanced technology to hack vehicle security systems.

“Motor vehicle theft costs owners more than $8 billion each year, with more thefts happening in the summer than any other time of year,” said Lauren Fabrizi, spokesperson for AAA Northeast. “By being vigilant and taking preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the chance of your car being stolen.”

AAA Offers the Following Tips to Prevent Car Theft:

Secure Your Vehicle: Always park with your windows up and doors locked. Keep your key fob with you at all times.

Choose Safe Parking: Park in well-lit areas and ideally in spots monitored by security cameras.

Remove Valuables: Take all valuables out of your car and keep anything left inside out of view. Theft of items from vehicles is widespread.

Consider a Tracking Device: Use a tracking device to locate your car if stolen. Report the incident immediately to the police and your insurance company.

Store Key Fobs Securely: Keep key fobs far from the vehicle when parked. Use a metal container to prevent signal boosting attacks that allow thieves to unlock and steal your car remotely.

Keep Software Updated: Ensure your vehicle’s software is up to date and check with your dealer for any safety and security recalls or technical service bulletins.

Never Leave Your Car Running Unattended: Even if locked, don’t leave your vehicle running without supervision.
