Make Music Day

By Julie O’Brien Deasy

What is “Make Music Day” and how can I participate?

Answer: Make Music Day is an international movement which brings free, community-wide, musical celebrations to hundreds of cities worldwide. The celebration is held annually on June 21, the summer solstice, in more than 800 communities around the world. Make Music Day events are organized with, for, and by the community.

New Canaan is one of these 800 communities! New Canaan Library and Carriage Barn Arts Center are teaming up to host local and regional musicians who will be performing original music and covers in a range of genres all day.

The day will kick-off at 10:00 am on the brand new patio at New Canaan Library with a pre-school singalong led by Meghan Murphy Gould and Storytime with librarian Miss Marie. All families and children are welcome to join.

At noon, there will be a classical concert at the Carriage Barn Arts Center.

Starting at 3:00 pm, acoustic sessions at multiple locations will feature performances on the keyboard, guitar, instruments, and vocal showcase for 10-minute slots. The New Canaan Town Brass Band will play from 4:40 – 5:00 pm.

From 5:00 – 6:30 pm, School of Rock will play with other selected bands following until 8:00 pm. At 8:00 pm and later, bands and musical acts will play at various venues around town.

If You are interested in performing at Make Music Day, send an email to newcanaan@makemusicday.org with your name/band name, a video or link to a video of your performance, genre of music and instruments used, and the number of performers in your group.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy this fun-filled day in New Canaan, hopefully with friends and neighbors connecting, and an abundance of joy and music.
