Dear Editor,
For the last three years the New Canaan Beautification League (NCBL) has been working with New Canaan’s Department of Public Works to transform the New Canaan train station into what we see today – a beautiful pollinator garden with new fencing and patio. Four new benches offer a wonderful resting area – two donated in memory of long time Beautification League member Wally Meyer by her family and two from the Beautification League.
The Beautification League is rather lucky to have some experts on our team. Landscape architect Barbara Wilson produced the hardscape drawings for the train station project and landscape designer Ty Tan chose the plantings. Faith Kerchoff, our Vice President of Beautification, spearheaded this project and we can’t thank her enough for all her hard work. Tiger Mann, Director of Public Works and Mose Saccary, Highway Department Superintendent, put together an amazing team who worked side by side with our Beautification League volunteers to plant the garden we see today.
Over 1,000 plants were purchased and planted – mostly on cold rainy days this past Fall and on some warmer days this Spring. Also, in an effort to be good stewards of the environment, all black plastic plant pots were returned to the nursery for re-use rather than going in the trash.
So once again, a big thank you to all the volunteers and to New Canaan Department of Public Works. Also, thank you to our community members who contributed to New Canaan Beautification League’s Annual Appeal. Yes, your donation goes toward the 220 plus hanging baskets that went up this week, maintaining triangles throughout town, Lee Garden and more but your donation also allows us to take on big projects, like the Train Station, that helps us beautify the town we love so much.
