PRESS RELEASE
New Canaan is set to join a worldwide celebration with the upcoming Make Music Day on Friday, June 21. This event, originating in France as Fête de la Musique in 1982, has expanded to over 2,000 cities globally, including 154 in the United States. Marking the summer solstice, Make Music Day promotes musical engagement for all, irrespective of age or proficiency.
This year’s festivities in New Canaan are organized through a collaboration between the Carriage Barn Arts Center and the New Canaan Library, offering a diverse array of free public performances. Events will be held on the newly constructed library terrace and other local venues, transforming the town into a vibrant stage.
The day’s schedule kicks off at 10 a.m. with a children’s musical story and sing-along session led by music instructor Meghan Murphy Gould and Miss Marie from the New Canaan Library. This family-friendly event aims to introduce young attendees to the joys of music through interactive storytelling and communal singing.
At noon, the Carriage Barn Arts Center will host a classical concert, providing a serene and sophisticated musical interlude. The program will showcase the talents of local classical musicians, offering attendees a chance to enjoy timeless compositions in a historic setting.
From 3 to 5 p.m., the New Canaan Town Brass Quintet will take the stage for an acoustic session. This performance promises an eclectic mix of brass renditions, spanning various genres and styles, reflecting the group’s versatile repertoire.
The evening segment, starting at 5 p.m., will feature performances by professional bands, culminating the day’s events with energetic and engaging musical acts. These performances aim to attract a broad audience, ensuring that the celebration resonates with music lovers of all tastes.
In addition to the scheduled events, pop-up performances will occur at various local venues throughout the day. These impromptu acts will add an element of spontaneity and surprise, encouraging community members to explore different parts of town and experience a wide range of musical expressions.
Make Music Day’s inclusive nature encourages participation from both amateur and professional musicians. Interested performers and venues wishing to host musical acts are invited to register by contacting newcanaan@makemusicday.org.
