New Canaan Eco-Initiatives

The Town of New Canaan has on an ambitious environmental stewardship campaign, with multiple events aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability among its residents. As part of this initiative, Tiger Mann, the Director of Public Works, is set to deliver a presentation on the mitigation of plastic waste in New Canaan. The address, scheduled for Earth Day on April 22, 2024, at Waveny House, is part of the “Planet vs Plastic” program, sponsored by the New Canaan Health Department and supported by Planet New Canaan.

Coinciding with these efforts, the town has released its schedule for Hazardous Waste Day in 2024, providing residents with a structured opportunity to dispose of harmful materials in an environmentally safe manner. The schedule indicates a series of dates and locations throughout various towns, including Westport, Greenwich, Darien, Stamford, and Norwalk, culminating in a final date in New Canaan on September 14. This initiative is instrumental in preventing the improper disposal of hazardous materials.

Adding to the town’s green initiatives, the “Clean Your Mile” campaign is set to take place during the week of April 22 to April 28, 2024. This initiative has a multi-faceted approach, involving individual citizens, community groups, and the Chamber of Commerce, all working in tandem to beautify various public spaces, including parks, schools, and downtown areas. This campaign reflects a community effort that has been successful in previous years and is aimed at giving New Canaan an annual “spring cleaning.”

Volunteers participating in “Clean Your Mile” are equipped with garbage bags and grabbers, provided by the Town Hall-Public Works Department or Inland Wetlands, and are tasked with collecting roadside trash. There is a call for youth groups, civic organizations, and families to join the effort, contributing to the town’s aesthetic and ecological health.

Furthermore, a Shred Day is scheduled for May 4, 2024, at 394 Main Street, facilitating the secure disposal of sensitive documents and thereby preventing identity theft.

Residents are encouraged to participate in these programs and contribute to the town’s sustainability efforts.
