Michael Miller, celebrated author of the historical novel “The High Bridge,” is set to address the New Canaan Men’s Club at their upcoming meeting on April 12 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The event, starting at 10 a.m., will feature Miller speaking at approximately 10:40 a.m., where he will delve into the intricate narrative of his novel and the historical context it encapsulates.

“The High Bridge” intertwines the lives of pioneering suffragist, abolitionist, and Native American advocate Matilda Joslyn Gage with former President Grover Cleveland. Both notable figures spent their early years in Fayetteville, NY, a pivotal setting in Miller’s novel. The book is set in mid-19th century upstate New York, a period marked by religious fervor, the quest for civil liberties, and the economic boom spurred by the Erie Canal. The novel narrates the extraordinary yet unlikely friendship between Joslyn Gage and Cleveland, as they unite their diverse perspectives and abilities to unravel a mystery and seek justice for a wrongfully accused Black man.

Miller’s personal connection to the novel’s backdrop is profound. Drawing parallels to his childhood experiences in a small village, Miller relates to the simplicity of Fayetteville, where Cleveland spent his early days. A lover of baseball, much like Cleveland, Miller recounts his childhood filled with sports, playing baseball and tennis, and navigating the challenges of bullies and social dynamics. This personal history enriches his narrative, lending authenticity and depth to his portrayal of the period.

Moreover, Miller’s passion for research plays a significant role in his writing process. His journey in academics, from obtaining a B.A. in biology to pursuing Master’s and doctoral programs, is marked by a deep-seated curiosity and a commitment to exploring the unknown. This scholarly approach is evident in “The High Bridge,” where meticulous historical details underpin the fictional narrative.

Aside from his literary pursuits, Miller takes pride in his roles as a father and teacher, highlighting the parallels between these roles and his dedication to nurturing growth, learning, and exploration. In retirement, he has continued this commitment through involvement in local learning programs, emphasizing the belief that learning is a lifelong endeavor.

Michael Miller invites attendees of the New Canaan Men’s Club meeting and the broader public to join him in a journey through history, where the quest for civility and equity is at the forefront. His book not only presents an engaging story but also prompts reflections on historical events and their impact on contemporary society.
