New Canaan High School has etched its name as a powerhouse, particularly with its recent triumph in the 2024 CIAC Class L Championship. The season, marked by record-breaking performances and strategic excellence, was a spectacle of athletic prowess and teamwork. At the heart of this success is Coach Katherine Munson, whose insights provide a compelling narrative of the team’s journey.
Record-Breaking Performances
and Team Depth
“Our achievements this season are a testament to the hard work and dedication of every swimmer on the team,” Munson began, reflecting on the team’s collective effort. The New Canaan team shattered records, with Munson proudly stating, “I think we broke nine in total this season.” Such a feat underlines the team’s dominance in the sport.
A crucial factor in the team’s success is the depth of talent across the board. Senior Nate Codd, an often under-recognized athlete, emerged as a standout performer, particularly in the Men’s 100 Yard Butterfly and the 50 Freestyle. Munson highlighted his achievement: “Nate was third in the 50 free, which to be top three in both your individual events is really amazing.” Codd’s performance is a clear indicator of the team’s broad-based talent.
The Challenge of Setbacks
However, the path to victory was not without its hurdles. A notable setback was the disqualification of junior Eric Huang in the 100 Yard Butterfly due to a technical error by Huang, a moment that tested the team’s resilience. “Eric was disqualified, which unfortunately, was especially difficult because he would’ve easily won the meet at opens,” Munson recalled.
The Culture of Excellence
At the core of New Canaan’s swimming success lies a culture deeply ingrained by Munson and her coaching philosophy. “We’ve tried to really build a culture and an environment on our team where they feel this sense of belonging and this sense of pride in being a Ram,” Munson explained. This culture of excellence and belonging is crucial in fostering not only individual talent but also a strong sense of team spirit.
Individual Highlights and Future Stars
Looking at individual performances, Munson pointed to several swimmers whose contributions were pivotal. Jack Haley, a junior, was a force to be reckoned with in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 500 Yard Freestyle, delivering times of 1:38.90 and 4:31.42, respectively. Munson’s anticipation for Haley’s future is palpable: “Jack Haley had such a phenomenal state open championship meet.”
Mascarinas, another senior, showcased his versatility, excelling in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and the 100 Yard Freestyle. His time of 56.56 seconds in the breaststroke was a standout performance, earning significant points for the team.
Eric Huang, despite his disqualification setback, displayed his skill in the 100 Yard Backstroke, finishing with an impressive time of 51.60 seconds. Munson’s expectations for Huang’s future are high, as she noted, “We’re looking for Eric to win SCX states and opens in the hundred fly and probably set the open state record.”
The Road Ahead
As Munson looks ahead, she sees a bright future for New Canaan swimming, driven by the potential of its younger swimmers. The development of talents like George Wang, a sophomore, and other underclassmen, is a key focus. “With two more years at the high school level, Wang has ample time to refine his techniques and build on his endurance,” Munson said, emphasizing the importance of long-term athlete development.
