With two outstanding candidates for state senate in the 36th District, the New Canaan Democratic Town Committee had a hard choice to make at its delegate selection meeting on March 27th. The two candidates vying for the endorsement were Trevor Crow, who ran in a strong and tireless campaign in 2022 but narrowly lost by just 89 votes to Republican Ryan Fazio, and Nick Simmons, who served Gov. Ned Lamont as deputy chief of staff before taking on a role in the Biden Administration overseeing the re-opening of the nation’s schools in the aftermath of Covid.
Both candidates had strong support from the DTC, but the majority of its membership voted for Simmons after hearing nominating speeches backing Trevor Crow from Cynthia Dul and Angela Jameson. Susan Edmands spoke on behalf of Nick Simmons.
In the remarks, Trevor was praised for her previous campaign, her strong commitment to the party’s values and policies and her support of a constitutional amendment protecting a woman’s right to decide. Nick’s experience as a top aide to Gov. Ned Lamont, his role in the Biden Administration overseeing school re-openings relating to the pandemic and his support for a woman’s right to choose and gun safety policies were cited in Edmand’s nominating remarks.
New Canaan’s Democrats praised both candidates, and recognized that the decision was difficult, but that Simmons would be the stronger candidate to defeat the incumbent. Learn more about Simmons’ campaign at his website https://www.nicksimmonsforct.com/.
Votes for the other candidates in the upcoming election were unanimous: U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, State Sen. Ceci Maher, and State Rep. Lucy Dathan.
