Gearing Up for Annual “Clean Your Mile”

The Town of New Canaan is rallying its citizens once again for the annual Clean Your Mile initiative, scheduled for the week of April 22 to April 28. Joining forces with the Chamber of Commerce and Planet New Canaan, the town is encouraging a community-wide cleanup efforts.

For several years, the annual Clean Your Mile initiative has incorporated three primary components: individual residents taking on neighborhood cleanup, community groups revitalizing public spaces such as parks and schools, and with the Chamber’s assistance encouraging local merchants to spruce up downtown areas, including sidewalks, storage zones, and parking facilities.

Residents are encouraged to participate at their convenience throughout the week, with town officials emphasizing the collective impact of individual and organizational involvement in enhancing the town’s aesthetic appeal and environmental quality.

Civic groups and youth groups are being encouraged to target specific areas, including schools, parks, parking lots, and other public locales. Families are also encouraged to mobilize neighborhood teams to address roadside litter on their streets, encouraging community-wide engagement.

To facilitate the cleanup process, garbage bags and a limited supply of grabbers are available for pick-up at the Town Hall’s Public Works Department or Inland Wetlands Department. Dumpsters will be conveniently stationed in the train station commuter lot from Friday to Sunday, with residents urged to prioritize safety while undertaking roadside cleaning tasks.

Upon completing cleanup activities in their respective neighborhoods, volunteers are asked to notify the Highway Department for bag pick-up arrangements by dialing 203-594-3704. Additionally, volunteers are reminded to securely place collected bags on grassy shoulders, refraining from roadside placement to ensure safety and efficiency in collection efforts.
