Question: Where can I donate gently used clothes and other textiles in our area?
Answer: We all have clothes and household items that we do not need or use anymore. Luckily there are several great organizations close by that will take your unwanted items and put them to good use. Spring is a great time to clean out closets and drawers!
The New Canaan Thrift Shop is a non-profit, entirely volunteer-run organization founded in 1930, and located at 2 Locust Ave. They accept donations of gently used articles of clothing, accessories, housewares like sheets and towels, and much more including sporting goods, small appliances, toys and games. All proceeds directly benefit the patients of Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County. Donations are accepted from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Monday through Friday. For more information, or if you have questions on what they accept, give them a ring at 203 966 2321.
Person to Person is a Fairfield County-based organization based in Darien and supports those in our area as they move toward stability with food, clothing, and housing assistance. All donated items are given directly to the families and individuals they support. Person to Person is currently collecting spring and summer clothing, starting April 1 and running to August 30. Also needed are clean towels, sheets, and other household items. Donations can be dropped off at their Darien location at 1864 Post Road from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Items should be cleaned, bagged, sorted, and labeled if possible. For more information on Person to Person see their website at www.p2phelps.org/who-we-are.
Finally, if you have clothing items that are stained, torn, or just too worn out to donate, bring them to the New Canaan Transfer Station for recycling! All types of textiles can be recycled, including clothing, sheets, towels, shoes, and stuffed animals! All items should be placed in a bag and dropped in the white textile recycling containers that are near the trash bins. You must have an active Transfer Station pass to use the textile recycling bins.
