On March 16th, New Canaan-based musician Michael-Louis Smith will join the Carriage Barn Arts Center as a part of their “Carriage Barn After Hours” series to bring audiences an evening of music and camaraderie. The event, “Michael-Louis Smith and Friends,” aims to bring the Jazz scene of Greenwich Village, Manhattan, to New Canaan.
“I started playing music and playing shows when I was 14. I knew this was something I wanted to do forever,” reminisced Smith, reflecting on his journey from Saratoga Springs, New York, to New York City and, eventually, to New Canaan. Following his move in 2014, Smith wanted to create opportunities for live music in his newfound hometown. His efforts led to the inception of Jazz Night at the Carriage Barn, a series that has evolved to include diverse musical experiences ranging from jazz to rock and reggae. “I wanted to offer what I could to the town, so I started Jazz Night at the Carriage Barn… It was a way to bring some of that New York energy to New Canaan,” he explained.
The upcoming concert on March 16th will incorporate this energy and will resemble a cumulation of Michael-Louis Smith’s musical journey so far. He described the event as “Kind of a retrospective of albums I’ve released in the past and different groups I’ve played with, and we’re all going to get together for one show as Michael-Louis Smith and Friends.”
The concert will feature talented musicians such as Stacy Dillard on the saxophone, Mike Roninson on bass, Ismail Lawal on drums, and more. With a horn section, two keyboardists, and a stellar rhythm section, Smith “and Friends” will deliver a night of exciting performances and music from multiple genres. “We’re going to offer some traditional jazz, but we’re also doing some Afrobeat, some rock, and will maybe throw in a reggae tune,” Smith revealed. “We’re basically going to be bringing the New York City jazz scene to New Canaan for the night, so it’s going to be pretty exciting,” he said.
Smith emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming space for attendees to socialize, enjoy local cuisine, and connect with fellow music enthusiasts. “It’s just a fun event for everybody,” he exclaimed. Partners like New Canaan Music, Fifth Hammer Brewing Company, and Walter Stewart’s Market, Wines & Spirits will contribute to the vibrant atmosphere, ensuring a memorable experience for all.
Offering an invitation to our readers and to anyone interested in attending the March 16th event, Smith stated, “People who have been to the concert series know how awesome it is. For anyone who hasn’t been, hopefully, they can read the piece and get an idea of how much fun it is. It’s just a great space. The park is so beautiful, and obviously, the music is going to be top-notch.”
