St. Patrick’s Day

By Julie O’Brien Deasy

Question: What are some local St. Patrick’s Day events?

Answer: According to the most recent US Census, about 15% of Connecticut residents are of Irish ancestry. But on March 17, anyone in the mood to celebrate the “Luck of the Irish” can claim that heritage for their own – if only for the day! Our area has a diverse group of events planned to mark St. Patrick’s Day – see below for a few examples.

If you are in the mood for a parade, Norwalk will host its annual St. Patricks’ Day Parade on Saturday, March 9. The parade will step off at 11:00 am from Veteran’s Park and continue through South Norwalk. This year’s Grand Marshall is Donal Leahy, a partner in O’Neill’s Pub and Restaurant. Post-parade, O’Neill’s (93 North Main Street, Norwalk) will host a fundraiser/St. Patrick’s Day party starting at 11:30. The event will feature live music, a special menu, and more. Visit www.oneillsono.com.com for more information.

For some music direct from Ireland, On Saturday, March 16 the Irish Band The Kings of Connaught will be performing at Hibernian Hall (186 Greyrock Place) at 5:00 pm. The Kings of Connaught is a three piece folk/ballad group from County Galway who are currently on a US Tour. During intermission, the Lynn Academy of Irish Dance will perform. Tickets can be purchased from www.eventbrite.com.

For something more nature-oriented, Grace Farms is hosting an interactive tour for families on March 17 from 3-4:00 pm. This walking tour will explore Grace Farms’ River building and will highlight how a building’s design can reduce its impact on the environment. Kids will be able to build models and play with some of the materials used to create homes and community spaces. Recommended for ages 5 and up with adult caregivers. Visit www.gracefarms.org for more details.

And Greenwich will be hosting their parade on March 17 beginning at 2pm on Greenwich Avenue. Arrive early to park.
