New Canaan CARES, an impactful organization dedicated to the well-being of the community, is set to begin the Spring session of their High School Leadership Program on February 26. The initiative aims to foster the growth and development of the next generation of leaders within the community.

New Canaan CARES is an independent, non-profit community organization whose purpose is to advance the health and well-being of youth and families. Founded with a mission to promote healthy and empowered lifestyles among New Canaanites, Executive Director Colleen Prostor and Education and Program Manager Maureen Asiel strive to provide responsive educational programs that support and strengthen parenting skills, positive youth development, and healthy lifestyles – free of charge.

The organization’s endeavors center around education, mentorship, and community engagement; offering programs for youth, adults, and the community as a whole. Through a range of programs and initiatives, CARES has consistently strived to address the evolving needs of youth and families, nurturing resilience, and fostering positive relationships.

The High School Leadership Program stands as a testament to this commitment, offering students a unique opportunity to cultivate essential leadership skills while making meaningful contributions to their community. The program runs in the Fall and Spring with the upcoming Spring session of the program running from Monday, February 26 to Tuesday, April 29. The 7-week program focuses on values, ethics, public speaking, communication, and decision-making.

The program, designed to transcend traditional classroom learning, empowers students to explore their potential as leaders and agents of change. Through hands-on involvement in community organizations and projects, participants gain invaluable experience, honing critical skills such as public speaking, time management, organization, and poise. “By allowing students to step outside the classroom and get involved in a variety of community organizations, they learn they can truly make a difference in the lives of others,” the organization’s website states.

With a focus on inclusivity and empowerment, the program encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new challenges, and develop a sense of purpose and responsibility. Collaborative learning experiences and mentorship opportunities allow students to emerge not only as confident leaders but also as compassionate and empathetic individuals. Alex G., a New Canaan High School Junior, and Leadership Program participant shared that, “Even if you think you know everything there is to know about leadership, you will walk way from this program a better leader and a better person.”

The High School Leadership Program underscores New Canaan CARES’ unwavering dedication to fostering positive youth development and strengthening community ties. Outside of the program, New Canaan CARES is responsible for offering experiences and programs to students as well as adults.

There are many ways to get involved with the organization, and volunteers are always welcome and appreciated.
