At The Country Club of New Canaan on April 10, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, the Voices Center for Resilience (VOICES) will present its 2024 Building Bridges Award to Bob Woodruff, the acclaimed Emmy award-winning journalist and ABC News anchor, during their Building Bridges Luncheon. This event not only celebrates Woodruff’s remarkable achievements but also highlights the vital work of VOICES in supporting those affected by tragedy.
Woodruff, a native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, born in 1961, joined ABC News in 1996, embarking on a distinguished journalism career. His life took a dramatic turn in 2006 when, while reporting from Iraq, he was severely injured by a roadside bomb. This incident led to a traumatic brain injury, marking a period of immense personal challenge and resilience. Defying odds, Woodruff returned to broadcasting in just over a year, bringing to the forefront the plight of wounded soldiers and the complex challenges they face.
The VOICES 2024 Building Bridges Award, as explained by VOICES Founding Director Mary Fetchet, honors individuals who make a significant impact by paying it forward. She remarks, “We are honored to present Bob with VOICES 2024 Building Bridges Award. Bob’s resilience and courageous recovery serve as a beacon of hope for those grappling with traumatic circumstances. His story also highlights the important role of family and friends in supporting recovery. Bob’s dedication to improving the lives of others embodies VOICES mission to promote resilience.”
VOICES, since the aftermath of 9/11, has been at the forefront of providing long-term support, focusing on mental health care and wellness for thousands of victims’ families, responders, and survivors. The organization collaborates with various partners to assist communities in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from tragedies. This comprehensive approach underscores VOICES’ commitment to resilience and its efforts to build bridges between different segments of society affected by tragedy.
In addition to honoring Woodruff, the event will feature a musical medley by Broadway star Ali Ewoldt, accompanied by David Hancock Turner. Ewoldt’s presence, along with her impressive Broadway credentials in shows like “Les Misérables” and “The Phantom of The Opera”, adds a cultural dimension to the luncheon, complementing its theme of resilience through art and storytelling.
Woodruff’s journey from a life-altering injury to a champion for veterans and their families through his Bob Woodruff Foundation is inspirational. His foundation has invested millions in support of veterans, highlighting his commitment to service and advocacy. This aligns seamlessly with VOICES’ mission of fostering resilience and providing support to those affected by traumatic events.
