The boys’ swim team at New Canaan High School is making waves this season, emerging as a powerhouse under the guidance of Coach Muson. Described by Muson as “one of the strongest teams in the program’s history,” this squad is not just racing against time and opponents; they’re charting a course through record-breaking waters.
Coach Muson offers an insightful look into a season that’s shaping up to be historic. “Things are going really well,” she asserts, pointing to the team’s impressive record: six wins against a single loss to Greenwich, the defending Open’s champions. With the final meets on the horizon, Muson anticipates a stellar finish.
Beyond a strong seasonal record, the team has its sights set on loftier goals. “We’re definitely going to be battling it out for that FCIAC title,” says Coach Muson. They’re also on track to secure their fourth consecutive Class L State championship.
The Open Championship, presents another opportunity for glory. Muson explains the significance: “The team that gets the most kids to qualify for the Open Championship can then go for the Open title.” This prestigious event is firmly in the sights of the New Canaan swimmers.
Key swimmers have been pivotal in the team’s success. Senior captain Deacon Mascarinas, bound for Division I swimming at Colgate, stands out for his versatility and record-breaking potential. Junior Jack Haley, committed to Northwestern, is a vital asset, bringing strength and experience to the team.
Junior Eric Huang, balancing academic excellence with swimming prowess, is a contender for breaking school records in the 100 Fly and 100 Back. Sophomore Oliver Carr and freshman George Wang are also making significant contributions, the former with his sprinting versatility and the latter as a major point scorer, even as a freshman.
Coach Muson’s pride in her team is palpable and the mix of seasoned leaders and emerging talents on her team not only sets them up for immediate success but also promises a bright future for New Canaan swimming.
The next meet is scheduled for today at home against Danbury at the YMCA Pool at 3:30 p.m.
