Silvermine Galleries Kicks Off the New Year

The Silvermine Arts Center is set to unveil two distinct exhibitions from January 13 through February 15. The 2024 New Members Exhibition introduces 38 newly inducted artists into Silvermine’s historic Guild of Artists, including two New Canaan locals, while Donna Forma’s ‘Rhythm and Mood’ provides a solo exploration of nature-inspired sculptures.

Silvermine’s history dates back to1906, when sculptor Solon Borglum initiated weekly critiques and annual exhibitions. In 1922, the Guild of Artists, in combination with these exhibitions joined the non-profit sphere; making 2024, Silvermine Galleries’ 102nd year. Today, with over 300 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, including luminaries such as Alice Neel, James Rosenquist, and honorary member Faith Ringgold, the Guild continues to uphold rigorous standards of artistic excellence.

The 2024 New Members Exhibition celebrates the addition of 38 talented artists to Silvermine’s Guild of Artists. The showcase encompasses a diverse range of mediums and styles, emphasizing innovative interpretations of landscape, still life, and figure painting. The exhibition not only celebrates uniqueness and individuality, but spotlights creatives from New Canaan, as well as in surrounding communities, and provides a platform for talented artists to receive recognition.

Among the featured artists, Paul Balmer, a globally recognized talent hailing from New Canaan, draws inspiration from his South African and Australian roots to craft intricate abstract paintings. His exploration of still life and cityscapes resonates with depth and cultural nuances. Constance Keller, a photographer and New Canaan local, will be featured in the exhibition as well. Her work aims to capture a fleeting moment, leading to photos that entice and attract viewers who desire to see the deeper meaning. She recounted her intricate artistic process which involves, “Making use of multiple exposures, abstract concepts and materials at hand to add a sense of structure to the images that is often found in poetry,”.

This concept of visual poetry is present in Donna Forma’s exhibit as well. Both exhibitions spotlight groundbreaking interpretations of varying mediums, showcasing a harmonious blend of geometric forms, vibrant colors, and evocative narratives. They celebrate and call to attention art and nature on large and small scales.

Donna Forma, an acclaimed Connecticut artist and former faculty member at the Hartford Art School, showcases a collection of organic sculptures crafted from roots, resin, wood, gold mica, and glass. Her works invite viewers to explore the intricate layers of nature, emphasizing themes of protection, beauty, and environmental consciousness. “Being a sculptor obsessed with the form, shape, and texture of things and having them convey particular emotions, I believe that our importance as individuals is put into perspective when we see nature,” she said.

The title ‘Rhythm and Mood’ encapsulates Forma’s intent to evoke personal connections with nature, urging viewers to appreciate and safeguard the environment. Her sculptures, ranging from expansive installations to intimate pieces, highlight the delicate balance and inherent beauty found within the natural world.

The exhibits will be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are also invited to attend the opening reception on Saturday, January 20, from 2 to 4 p.m., providing an opportunity to engage directly with the artists and immerse themselves in Silvermine’s vibrant artistic community.
