In a significant development for the historic Playhouse in the heart of downtown, a $2 million bond is on the agenda for approval by the Connecticut State Bond Commission, according to State Senator Ryan Fazio who announced the bond earlier this week.

Representative Tom O’Dea explained the history. “Back in 2000,” he wrote, “a group of us, led by then First Selectman Dick Bond, pushed for the town to purchase the New Canaan Playhouse. In June, 2022, after years of neglect by the previous tenant, it was leased to Cinema Lab who committed to put in over $1,500,000. Unfortunately, the renovation was much more expensive than anticipated. Well today, thanks to Governor Ned Lamont and his chief of staff Jonathan Dachs, after the initial bonding request by State Senator Ryan Fazio in June, and bipartisan support of State Representative Keith Denning, State Representative Lucy Dathan, and State Senator Ceci Maher, we are on the Governor’s agenda for Bonding approval for $2,000,000”. The vote is scheduled to take place today, December 15.

“I am proud of the bipartisan effort,” O’Dea said, “and very appreciative of the Governor and Jonathan Dach.”

The Playhouse is currently undergoing the transformation into Cinema Lab, a modern cinematic experience retaining its historic charm. Andy Childs and Luke Parker Bowles, principals behind this venture, shared insights into the project with the New Canaan Sentinel. “We are committed to preserving the Playhouse’s historic essence while incorporating 21st-century technology,” Childs explained.

The renovation includes state-of-the-art audiovisual systems and a redesign aimed at creating a multifunctional community space. “We envision Cinema Lab as a place where the community can gather, not just for movies, but for various social interactions,” added Parker Bowles.

The reopening of the Playhouse, slated for the end of the first quarter of 2024, is eagerly anticipated by residents. “It’s more than a cinema; it’s a cultural hub that will bring people together and boost local businesses,” Childs remarked.

With plans to feature a mix of mainstream and alternative films, Cinema Lab aims to cater to a wide audience. “Our goal is to create a diverse and inclusive cinematic experience that resonates with the entire community,” Parker Bowles emphasized.

The project, a private-public partnership, has garnered significant local support.

“The allocation of $2 million to support the renewal of The Playhouse and improvements to the New Canaan business district will be a major positive development to the town and the entire region, which will benefit from the renovation of the theatre. I was very happy to submit this request for the town in the spring and appreciate the collaboration and support of the Governor and my local legislative colleagues since then,” Senator Fazio said.
