A few years ago, when we were figuring out how to bring accomplished professional musicians to perform full seasons here on a regular basis, the founders of New Canaan Chamber Music realized that the key was volunteerism. It’s the secret sauce of New Canaan’s cultural scene. We recruited an incredible all-volunteer working board whose members manage, publicize and produce our events as well as any professional production company could. We also secured the involvement of two storied groups of high schoolers–the Service League of Boys and the National Charity League–to help circulate our posters, set up our concerts, greet our patrons and clean up after.
These partnerships have worked like a charm. Both NCL and the SLOB volunteers are hard-working, reliable, and bring good-natured youthful enthusiasm to our events. We couldn’t survive without them.
We and our patrons are forever grateful. We hope that a dividend of our partnership will be to expose the NCL and SLOB volunteers to what community and culture can be like when they finish school. Someday they’ll be on volunteer boards and will seek partnerships with youth service groups to help achieve dreams in their communities as well.
