It was with anticipation and thanks that I watched Dr. Luizzi’s school start time survey presentation during the August 21st 2023 New Canaan BOE meeting. I was happy and relieved to hear many of the positive results from the survey. The results are a testament to the efforts of the administration, including Dr. Luizzi and transportation coordinator Roy Walder. It was also thanks to the consideration and wisdom of the Board of Education members who approved the current schedule. It was a plan that would allow healthier start times for high school students, while maintaining reasonable start times for younger students. Many saw it as a fair and equitable compromise for all our students.
However, it should be noted that some members of the board did not want this compromise but preferred a more “drastic” alternative that would have likely been far less well received by students and parents. These BOE members wanted, supported, and lobbied for this less equitable plan and only reluctantly accepted the current plan, when it was evident that the wisdom of other board members would prevail. This issue is not a party issue, but one of principle, we should expect our elected officials to stand behind their records.
Again, congratulations and many thanks for the efforts and dedication of the administration for the successful implementation of the healthier start times initiative. Also, thanks to the members of the New Canaan BOE who supported the current plan and hopes that those who did not can apply a more equitable, considerate, and compassionate perspective going forward.
