The Lapham Community Center, nestled within the scenic Waveny Park, is extending an invitation to all New Canaan residents for a special open house event.

With roots tracing back to the Lapham family’s original construction, the building was transformed into a bustling community hub in the early 1990s. Kathy Collins, Program Manager at Lapham, reflected on its rich history, “It’s a beautiful setting. First, it was a family’s home and then the town took it over… converted it into a center.”

As the open house approaches, the Lapham Community Center stands as a testament to the town’s spirit of unity and shared experiences.

During the open house on the 6th, from 1:00 pm to 4 pm, residents can acquaint themselves with the array of activities and offerings. “Our fall programs offer a range of options including art, history, bridge, cooking and fitness classes, as well as an array of special events. “We have a lot of clubs and organizations in town that use our facility,” Collins shared, “from Mahjong and book groups by the Encore Club to cinema and bridge sessions with the New Canaan Men’s Club. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!”

Beyond organized activities, the center is also a haven for informal gatherings. Kathy elaborated, “I’m not sure everyone knows that they can come here with a group of friends. They can call and make a reservation for one of the rooms we have here.” Stressing the inclusivity of the center, Collins also noted, “It’s not just a senior center. It’s an actual community center. So there are groups that’ll come that have some younger people in them.”

Aiming to strengthen community ties, there’s a renewed emphasis on intergenerational activities. “In conjunction with the library, we’re doing bingos… an activity that parents could do with their kids here,” Collins mentioned, pointing towards the center’s commitment to inclusivity and fostering connections.
